An Open Letter to Black Families on Being Unapologetically Black
As we honor Black History Month, we do so in a time of profound challenges. Civil rights are under attack, diversity initiatives are being dismantled, and hate has found new platforms to thrive. The uncertainty of our future can be scary, but one thing remains constant: our strength. Now more than ever, we must stand firm in our Blackness—unapologetically, proudly, and powerfully.
We have a legacy of resistance. From the moment our ancestors fought against enslavement, through the civil rights movement, to today’s struggles for justice, we have always been a people of resilience. We have refused to be erased, silenced, or denied our dignity. This legacy is our foundation, a reminder that even in the face of adversity, we rise. The road ahead may be rocky, but we walk it with the wisdom and courage of those who came before us.
Standing boldly in our Blackness means defying the attacks on DEI. Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives are being challenged, with some arguing that efforts to level the playing field are divisive or unnecessary. But we know the truth: DEI is not just a buzzword—it is essential to our progress. We cannot allow those who fear progress to dictate our place in society. Whether in schools, workplaces, or communities, we must continue to advocate for equitable spaces and opportunities. When they try to push us out, we push forward.
We must cultivate Black joy and excellence. Resistance does not only come in the form of protest—it is also found in our joy. In a world that often seeks to rob us of peace, choosing happiness is revolutionary. Celebrate your Blackness in all its brilliance. Teach your children to love their history, embrace their culture, and know their worth. Pour into Black businesses, amplify Black voices, and uplift one another. Our excellence has never been dependent on outside validation—it is our birthright.
The future is uncertain, but we have the power to shape it. We must arm our children with knowledge, critical thinking skills, and an unwavering sense of self-worth. Teach them about the heroes whose names aren’t always in textbooks and remind them that they are the next chapter in our ongoing story. Encourage them to dream without limits and to walk in their truth with confidence.
We must stand unapologetically in our truth. Being unapologetically Black is not about hate or exclusion—it is about love. Love for ourselves, our community, and the promise of a future where we are seen, heard, and valued. It is about refusing to shrink ourselves to make others comfortable. It is about walking into every room knowing we belong.
This Black History Month, and every month, let us honor our past by living fully in our present. Let us move forward with intention, unity, and an unshakable belief in our power. No matter what the world throws at us, we will continue to rise—unapologetically Black, now and forever.
