Pride Month: Embracing and Advocating for Diversity in Early Childhood Literacy

Written by Board Member Jonathan Salinas, former Early Elementary Educator.

Pride Month is a time to honor the history, struggles, and achievements of the LGBTQ+ community. For our youngest learners, it's also an opportunity to introduce them to stories that reflect their own experiences and those of their peers. When children see characters who look like them, share their cultural background, or navigate similar challenges, they feel seen and understood.

During my time as a first-grade teacher, there were times when my school did not have books that reflected the unique makeup of my classroom. It was frustrating to see the lack of representation, especially as an Openly LGBTQ+ Latino Educator. In today's political climate, especially in red states, it is even harder for teachers to navigate finding these essential books.

Unfortunately, some states are blocking  access to diverse books for children, particularly those featuring LGBTQ+ families and topics. Lawmakers are actively removing these books from our shelves, making it increasingly challenging for educators to find inclusive materials. These obstacles directly impact children's learning and identity development, making it harder for them to see themselves and their experiences reflected in the stories they read.

During Pride Month and beyond, it is more crucial than ever to support the inclusion of culturally relevant and LGBTQ+ inclusive literature in early childhood and elementary education.
